Contraception Q&A

What is contraception?

Contraception, also known as birth control, is the term used for the many options a woman can use to prevent pregnancy. Never before have women had so many options, and finding the right birth control method is far easier when you partner with a trusted gynecologist.

No matter if you’re just getting started with contraception or want to try a new method, the team at Beyond Women’s Care can guide you toward the best option to fit your needs and lifestyle.

What are my options for contraception?

One way to think about birth control options is to divide them into two categories: barrier methods and hormonal methods.

Barrier birth control

These methods work by creating a physical barrier between sperm and egg. They are a good option for women who encounter problems with hormonal birth control.

Examples include:

  • Male or female condoms
  • Diaphragm
  • Birth control sponge
  • Cervical cap

Using spermicide with a barrier method can increase the efficacy by destroying any sperm that moves beyond the barrier.

Hormonal birth control

These methods work by altering your hormonal balance to reduce the risk of pregnancy. Many women find them more convenient than barrier methods because they require little-to-no advance planning.

Examples include:

  • Birth control pill
  • Birth control shot
  • Vaginal ring
  • Birth control patch
  • Birth control implant
  • Hormonal IUD (there is also a version that uses copper to make the uterus inhospitable to pregnancy)

Many women try numerous birth control methods before finding the one that offers the best fit. Your needs might also change as you move through the stages of your life.

How do I know which method of contraception is right for me?

Every woman has a unique set of needs when it comes to contraception. Your doctor will discuss your family planning goals and overall lifestyle to help you find the right match.

For women who are not in a committed relationship, condoms are a good option. Not only do condoms have a high rate of effectiveness when used properly, but they are also the only option that also helps prevent sexually transmitted diseases.

Sponges, condoms, diaphragms, and cervical caps can be good choices if you are not having sex on a regular basis. These methods are used just before intercourse and do not offer lasting protection.

If you are in a mutually monogamous relationship where both partners have been tested for STDs, hormonal options might be the best fit. The birth control shot and birth control implant offer lasting protection that you don’t have to think about, which is a relief for many women.

For couples who are certain they do not want to add to their family, permanent options like vasectomy and tubal ligation are worth consideration.
