Endometrial Ablation Q&A

What is endometrial ablation?

Endometrial ablation is a procedure that removes a thin layer of your endometrium, the tissue lining your uterus. It is an excellent option for treating abnormally heavy menstrual bleeding.

Although the word ablation means the removal of tissue, the process of having endometrial ablation is technically not a surgical procedure. Instead of using a scalpel or other device to manually remove your uterine lining, carefully controlled electricity is incorporated into endometrial ablation procedures.

For many women with heavy periods, endometrial ablation is a great way to find relief without more invasive procedures like hysterectomy. You only need one treatment to achieve a lifetime of results.

What happens during endometrial ablation?

Beyond Women’s Care offers two systems for endometrial ablation: Minerva® and NovaSure®. Both work in similar ways to remove enough of your endometrial lining to reduce heavy bleeding.

Your doctor begins by widening your cervical opening to access your uterus. A slender wand positions the ablation device before the balloon-like device expands to conform to the size and shape of your uterus.

Next, precisely controlled radiofrequency energy channels into the device. The energy destroys a portion of your endometrial lining in a process that only takes around 90 seconds to complete.

Your gynecologist then pulls the device back into the treatment wand and removes the wand from your uterus through your vagina. From start to finish, the entire endometrial ablation procedure takes only three to four minutes.

Am I a good candidate for endometrial ablation?

The most important thing to understand about endometrial ablation is the fact that the procedure will dramatically reduce your chances of motherhood. Though it is still technically possible to become pregnant after this procedure, it is highly unlikely.

Therefore, candidates for endometrial ablation should be completely sure that they do not want to have children after the procedure. There is no way to reverse the removal of endometrial tissue, so your effects will be permanent.

For those who are certain that future pregnancies are not part of the plan, endometrial ablation is a great way to reduce abnormally heavy periods and increase your freedom. For some women, menstrual bleeding completely ends after the procedure, while virtually all women report dramatically lighter periods.
